Schmittrain is located southwest of Schondra on the Schondra River .

Schmittrain was founded in 1500 together with Untergeiersnest as a hamlet of Schönderling .

On May 1, 1978, Schönderling was incorporated into the Schondra market as part of the municipal reform. Schmittrain became a district of Schondra.
