Schukria Barakzai (* 1972 in Kabul , Afghanistan, also Shukria Barakzai ) is an Afghan politician and has been a member of the Wolesi Jirga parliament since the 2004 election , after having been a member of the Loja Jirga in 2003 , which brought the constitution of Afghanistan into effect after the Taliban was set. She is best known for her activities as an Islamic feminist . She belongs to the Pashtun tribe . Since the end of the Taliban era 2001, she is the editor of the newspaper Women's Mirror (also Aina-e-Zan ).

Life

Barakzai first attended Kabul University in the 1990s, but had to give up her pursuit of a degree in 1996 when the Taliban captured the city. After receiving corporal punishment by the Taliban in 1999 for being found in public on the way to see a doctor without her husband, she ran an illegal school for women and girls in her home in protest . Since the end of the Taliban's suppression, she has published the weekly, women’s bilingual newspaper Woman’s Mirror .

She obtained a degree in geology and archeology after 2001 . She is married and after 12 years her husband entered into a second marriage without her knowledge. Since then she has been campaigning against this polygyny . In 2014 she was injured in a suicide bombing in Kabul. According to her own statements, she regularly receives death threats , but it is unclear whether she was the target of this attack.

Barakzai served as the elected representative in the Loja Jirga 2003, whose purpose was to deliberate and vote on the draft constitution of Afghanistan . The following year she was elected to the Wolesi Jirga and thus part of the government. She is one of 71 women among the total of 249 MPs. She is considered a close confidante of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadsai .

Awards

Shukria Barakzai has won several awards, it was 2004 International Editor of the Year ( International Editor of the Year ) of the World Press Review and 2005 Woman of the Year by Woman's Hour , a program on BBC Radio 4 .

Aina-E-Zan

Barakzais weekly is concerned with "improving the understanding and dissemination of knowledge about Afghan women in society". She covers a wide range of topics, including maternal and infant mortality , child and forced marriage , domestic violence, and freedom of the press . In 2005 the circulation was around 3000 copies.
