The carving trade has a long tradition in Brienz. In the famine year of 1816 , the Brienz master turner Christian Fischer began decorating everyday objects with carvings and selling them to tourists. Soon he also began to train people from the region in carving. Between 1830 and 1860, the first great heyday of carving was in Brienz. Around 2000 people made a living from carving in the Bernese Oberland during this time. Wood carving from Brienz achieved international success at the World Exhibition in London in 1851 . In 1862 a Brienz association founded the first local training center for this craft with the Brienz drawing and modeling school . After five years, 61 young wood carvers (locally: Schnitzler ) attended the courses offered.

In 1884 the Brienz carving school was opened in the old parish hall. At that time, the municipality of Brienz vouched for the school. The school was successful and a new building was opened in 1898 with the help of the Canton of Bern . The "Schnätzi" belonged to the municipality of Brienz until 1928, after which it became a technical school and training workshop for the canton.

The school created a richly decorated room in Brienz for the Bundeshaus in Bern, which was exhibited at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris before it was installed in the new parliament building .

Today, the wood sculptors in Brienz produce sophisticated commissioned work and artistic works as well as souvenir items. The relationship between wood carving and tourism is still very close. To get the Schnitzmotive and knowledge of the history and practice of "Schnätzens", which was 1990 Foundation for the collection and exhibition of wood carvings Brienz , founded in 2009, the Swiss Woodcarving Museum was founded.

The current school building dates from 1949 and was completely renovated in 2014. In the same year the school celebrated its 130th anniversary. The school's exhibition is open to visitors.

education

The school offers training as a wood sculptor. Approx. 7 trainees are accepted annually, there are a total of 24 training positions.

In addition, since 2009, the facility has also had the function of a vocational school for apprentices in the professions of woodworker (in the two fields of turnery and white cooper ), basket and wickerwork designer and cooper . In the sense of dual training , the learners do practical training in their respective training companies. This makes the school the only technical school for creative wood professions in Switzerland.

In the immediate vicinity of the school is the Brienz violin making school, some of whose students are also taught at the carving school.
