The Guardian Angel Church is a Catholic church building in Eichstätt .

history

In the course of the Catholic reform , Prince-Bishop Johann Christoph von Westerstetten (1612/36) summoned the Jesuits to Eichstätt in 1614 and let them - whether from the Graubünden master builder Hans Alberthal or / and from the Jesuit brother Jakob Kurrer , is controversial - 1617/20 at Jesuitenplatz, today's Leonrodplatz, build a spacious pillar church with barrel vaults . It was destroyed by the Sweden Tower in 1634, with the exception of the surrounding walls, the choir vault and the 52 meter high tower, as was the neighboring Jesuit college , which was built as a successor to the “ Collegium Willibaldinum ” in 1624/26 .

In 1661 the renaissance church was re- vaulted, in 1717 the stucco decoration and fresco decoration in baroque style under the overall theological theme of “work of angels in salvation”, which led to the designation of the study church as “ guardian angel church”.

During the secularization , the demolition of the "old dilapidated chapel" requested by the state administrator in 1809 could be prevented. Partial restorations took place in 1844 and 1908/10, a complete renovation in 1961/64. However, one considered what valuable cultural assets one can find here and renounced the permanent installation of a people's altar or anvil. These two facilities are only loosely and mobile installed in the Eichstätter Guardian Angel Church. That is why the Una Voce movement held a levitated high mass in an extraordinary rite on the occasion of its 2003 annual conference in the Eichstätter Guardian Angel Church .

After a new facade color scheme in 2000 and the new paving of Leonrodplatz, the Guardian Angel Church, which has meanwhile been upgraded to a university church , shone in new splendor with its numerous angels (567 in wooden sculpture, stucco, oil and fresco painting). Numerous damage, in particular to important wooden components, made and still makes a thorough interior renovation necessary, for the financing of which a collection campaign under the motto "567 angels need help" was launched, the patron of which was the head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, Minister of State Siegfried Schneider (CSU).

Furnishing

The famous angel frescos are the work of the Worms painter Johann Michael Rosner , who received the commission through the mediation of Worms Auxiliary Bishop Johann Baptist Gegg from Eichstätt . Gegg's brother Johann Michael was the mayor of Eichstätt and a patron of the church.

The high altar painting is by Johann Evangelist Holzer .

meaning

The importance of the church is described by the diocese of Eichstätt as follows:

“The Guardian Angel Church is a nationally cultural and art-historical important sacred building. After the St. Michaelskirche in Munich and the Dillingen study church (verifiably built by Hans Alberthal) it ranks third in the historical sequence of German Jesuit churches. It is one of the earliest Jesuit churches in Germany and is closely related to the missionary efforts of the then still young Jesuit order. Today the church is used by the Episcopal Seminary in Eichstätt and the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. "
