The Guardian Angel Church (officially: Church of the Holy Guardian Angels ) is a Catholic church in Brühl in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1894 and 1897 in the neo-Gothic style.

history

Brühl was first mentioned in 1157 in a document stating that the Bishop of Speyer Günther von Henneberg acquired Brühl with his private fortune and handed it over to the Speyer monastery . A church was first mentioned in 1435, a chapel near today's cemetery. The service was held by the pastor of Ketsch . After 1453, the Knights of Handschuhsheim , who exercised local rule, founded their own church . After the Handschuhsheimers died out in 1600, three quarters of their fief fell to Speyer and a quarter to the Electoral Palatinate , which tried with force to enforce the Reformation service. In 1607 the ketch pastor was forbidden to come to Brühl, but more than two thirds of the Brühl residents remained Catholic.

After the church was split up in the Palatinate, the now badly dilapidated church was given to the Reformed in 1707. In 1709 Speyer renounced its secular rights, with which Brühl now belonged entirely to the Electoral Palatinate. In church terms, a change to the diocese of Worms followed in 1778 . In 1752 the Catholics were given their own church, in which, however, regular services were not held by Franciscans from Schwetzingen until 1779 . With the abolition of the monastery through secularization , the masses also ended, until a vicar came from Schwetzingen again from 1852.

At the end of the 19th century, the church was closed due to disrepair and replaced by the new Guardian Angel Church. It was consecrated on September 23, 1899 by Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Justus Knecht in honor of the Holy Guardian Angels . In 1903 Brühl was raised to its own parish . In 1905 more than four-fifths of Brühl's residents were Catholic, but the proportion fell, especially after the Second World War, due to immigration and exodus. In 1961 the proportion was 61 percent, in 2005 it was 42 percent. The Guardian Angel Congregation and the Ketscher St. Sebastian Congregation merged in 2006 to form the Brühl-Ketsch pastoral care unit. She belongs to the dean's office in Wiesloch in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .
