Schwantesia is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the German professor of prehistory and early history and botanist Gustav Schwantes .
description
The succulent plants of the genus Schwantesia grow compactly with numerous branches, each of which has a clump of leaves . The gray to bluish green, triangular leaves are only initially symmetrical in shape. They are usually wider than they are thick and can have serrated edges. Their leaf surface often feels tomentose.
The solitary flowers sit on short pedicels and are apparently bractless . There are five sepals . The petals are bright yellow and often white at the base. There are no thread-like staminodes . The stamens form a central column. The wreath-like nectaries form a ring. The five-compartment capsule fruits contain more or less pear-shaped seeds that are 0.65 to 0.9 millimeters long and 0.45 to 0.6 millimeters wide.
Systematics and distribution
The distribution area of the genus Schwantesia extends from the extreme south of Namibia to the north of the South African province of North Cape near Pofadder . The plants grow in crevices of quartzite rocks and only rarely in slate. The annual rainfall is less than 100 millimeters and falls mainly in March.
It was first described in 1927 by Kurt Dinter . The type species is Schwantesia ruedebuschii .
According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Schwantesia includes the following species:
- Schwantesia acutipetala L. Bolus
- Schwantesia borcherdsii L. Bolus
- Schwantesia constanceae N.Zimm.
- Schwantesia herrei L.Bolus
- Schwantesia loeschiana table
