Black Roussin's ammonium salt (after the French chemist François-Zacharie Roussin ) is a complex salt with the formula NH 4 [Fe 4 S 3 (NO) 7 ]. It is classified as a metal nitrosyl compound. It consists of the ammonium cation and the [Fe 4 S 3 (NO) 7 ] - - anion . The geometry of the anion cluster is an incomplete cube. The point group symmetry of the anion is C 3v . Other salts exist with the anion, such as the black Roussin sodium salt or the black Roussin iron salt .

Extraction and presentation

Black Roussin's salt is produced by passing nitrogen monoxide through a suspension of iron (II) sulfide in dilute alkali metal sulfide solution. It can also be formed from Roussin's red salt under mildly acidic conditions. This reaction is reversible and Roussin's red salt is formed back by alkalizing the reaction solution.

properties

The anion is structurally related to the iron-sulfur cluster , which occurs in various enzymes such as nitrogenase .

The monohydrate NH 4 [Fe 4 S 3 (NO) 7 ] × H 2 O crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system in the space group P 1 (space group no. 2) with the lattice parameters a  = 944  pm , b  = 994 pm, c  = 566 pm, α  = 117.2 °, β  = 101.3 ° and γ  = 101.1 ° as well as two formula units per unit cell . use

Black Roussin's ammonium salt is a nitric oxide donor. The nitric oxide introduced by Black Roussin's salt has been shown to be toxic to some melanomas and tumor cells . Black Roussin's salt also has an antibacterial (disinfectant) effect, which z. B. is exploited in the food industry.
