The Schwedeninsel (formerly Erlaich ) is a small island on the southern silting moor of the Ammersee , between the tributaries Ammer in the east and Rott (Alte Ammer) in the west.
geography
The Swedish island is 1.7 hectares in size, uninhabited, overgrown with reed meadows and is located in the nature reserve Vogelfreistätte Ammersee-Südufer (since 1979), which is closed to the public and where endangered bird species breed. Since the island is only separated from the mainland on the south side by a 200 meter long, 2 to 3 meter wide former moat, which is almost completely silted up by reeds , it is also considered a peninsula .
The island largely belongs to the municipality of Pähl , district Fischen am Ammersee in the district of Weilheim-Schongau , only a narrow strip on the west side with 0.2 hectares belongs to the market and the district of Dießen am Ammersee . The land owner is the Free State of Bavaria .
On the north bank are the rotting remains of an earlier, log- built restaurant. Despite the state right of first refusal , an Ammersee fisherman had acquired this in the highly sensitive nature reserve, but had to surrender it again.
history
During the Thirty Years' War , the residents of Dießen took their boats to safety from plundering Swedish soldiers on the Erlaich. This explains the current name of the island. The former name Erlaich still appears as a field name on current official maps.
