Swedish houses painted in Falun red

Falun red ( Swedish Faluröd , Falurött or Rödfärg ) or Schwedenrot is mainly in Sweden produced red emulsion paint for outdoor use. The name Falunrot refers to the Swedish town of Falun and its famous copper mine , which has been closed since 1992 .

The name Falu Rödfärg and the Falu Rödfärg logo are registered, protected trademarks of Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB , whose information indicates that the color corresponds to S 5040-Y80R of the Natural Color System or RAL color 3009. In addition to the classic red color (Röd), this manufacturer offers a lighter version (light red, Ljusröd). This has about the NCS value S 5040-Y70R and is said to have been the most widely used "Rödfärg" in the 18th century. There is no term for Falun red in web definition languages.

history

The pigment Falun red, obtained from the overburden of the copper mining in Falun, became popular as an exterior paint from the 16th century, as it gave the wooden houses predominant in Sweden a color that was reminiscent of the brick buildings of wealthy Central Europeans. The color scheme also occurred in the areas in Pomerania and Mecklenburg , which are dominated by Sweden , such as the Spycker Castle or the Wismar Schabbellhaus .

At the end of the 19th century, the red color was popular in all walks of life, and in the time of Swedish national romanticism, thanks to painters like Carl Larsson from Sundborn at Falun , it was anchored in the minds of many Swedes. Over the centuries, the red color became Sweden's national color for house building and has remained the traditional color for wooden buildings in rural areas to this day.

Manufacture and properties

The main pigments contained are silicon dioxide and iron oxide as well as vitriols of iron and copper , and in some cases also oxides of aluminum , magnesium , calcium , zinc and lead in smaller quantities. The eponymous pigment mixture has been extracted since 1616 as a by-product of the copper mining in Falun (which was closed in 1992) , where weathered, lean copper ore (also known as red mole ) is available in large quantities as overburden from copper ore extraction . It contains the raw materials for pigment production mainly in the form of quartz , magnetite and hematite . The ground iron oxide pigments are burned to red iron oxide and traditionally dispersed in an aqueous solution and processed into the finished paint .

Starch paste and linseed oil serve as binders . Rye flour is preferred as a starch supplier, as this flour binds water well and thus improves the processing properties. The other components of the paint can be pre-mixed for a very long time if the starch content is only added shortly before boiling and the subsequent coating. Falun red contains as filler also feldspar . Also diatomaceous earth can be used as additional filling and adjuvant be included, especially if pure metal oxide pigments are used instead of the ores or other waste products from the mining industry. Manufacturers of their paint also use biocides such as B. Tolylfluanid , Iodocarb or Dichloroctylisothiazolinon .

Falun red holds particularly well on rough-sawn, untreated and already processed wood that has been exposed to the weather for a while. While such wood cannot be coated economically with common lacquers or thick-layer glazes because of the high material consumption required and its durability on grayed wood is only limited, the Faluröd color combines particularly well with the rough wood surface. The coating takes a long time to dry. It does not form a barrier layer and still has a wood-preserving effect when used correctly and with a sufficient layer thickness , which is not attributed to its heavy metal content. However, the vitriol contained in it can cause contact corrosion . Falun red is not washable and partially smudge-proof. The aging of the paint layer does not result in flaking caused by cracking, but rather a " chalking " abrasion .
