history

Werewolf, Lucas Cranach the Elder , woodcut, 1512

Schwelentrup was first mentioned in 1151 as Suitherdincthorpe . In documents from 1350 the place was called Swederinctorpe , when Count Heinrich von Sternberg exempted the Jordan von Kalldorf from taxes from the settlement. According to the entry in the state treasury register of the Sternberg office, there were eleven farms and sites in Schwelentrup around 1535. At this time, the place was in the middle of extensive forests that belonged to the property of the Counts of Sternberg. The residents had permission to use the woods to fatten their pigs. The meat and ham of these animals were considered particularly tasty and were in great demand. The official allocation of the Hude and the forest near the village to the farmers did not take place until 1712. The Oelentrup domain from 1550 and the Göttentrup domain, which became a manorial dairy from 1589, are also located in the Schwelentrups area . Oelentrup is now administered by the Lippe regional association , while Göttentrup was sold in 2000. Schwelentrup became known during the Lemgo witch trials between 1660 and 1670 through rumors that werewolves were supposed to be up to mischief in this place . In the preliminary investigation, the farmer judge Jasper Schoef was accused of being a werewolf who killed 60 out of 100 sheep owned by sheep master Johan Lüeking . This allegation was then considered a grave insult and dangerous charge. The Gogericht protocols , however, do not provide any information about how the dispute over the werewolf rumors ended.

The oldest surviving building in Schwelentrup is the body penitentiary of the Pampel court from 1586/87. In the first half of the 20th century, the place was still difficult to reach in terms of traffic. Nevertheless, the first farm guesthouse existed as early as 1920 and with it the beginning of tourism . It was not until 1963 that the road to Schwelentrup was expanded to connect the Linderhofe NATO station .

On January 1, 1969 Schwelentrup became part of the municipality of Dörentrup.
