Sciaccarello is an old red wine variety that is grown on the French island of Corsica , mainly around Sartène and Ajaccio, on an area of ​​approx. 783 hectares (as of 2007, ONIVINS). Presumably it already existed in Roman times and it is believed that it was imported from Italy .

The late-ripening vine produces fruity, not very dark red wines and rosé wines , which are characterized by a herbal, peppery bouquet . Connoisseurs recognize aromas of violets (= mammolo), almonds, coffee and raspberries in wine .

It is often blended with the tannin-rich variety Nielluccio (this is how the Sangiovese grape variety is called in Corsica). In France, the 6 clones 744, 834, 835, 874, 875, 907, 930 and 961 are approved for growing quality wines. Clone 744 is the most common in cultivation.
