List of grape varieties |
Sciaccarello is an old red wine variety that is grown on the French island of Corsica , mainly around Sartène and Ajaccio, on an area of approx. 783 hectares (as of 2007, ONIVINS). Presumably it already existed in Roman times and it is believed that it was imported from Italy .
The late-ripening vine produces fruity, not very dark red wines and rosé wines , which are characterized by a herbal, peppery bouquet . Connoisseurs recognize aromas of violets (= mammolo), almonds, coffee and raspberries in wine .
It is often blended with the tannin-rich variety Nielluccio (this is how the Sangiovese grape variety is called in Corsica). In France, the 6 clones 744, 834, 835, 874, 875, 907, 930 and 961 are approved for growing quality wines. Clone 744 is the most common in cultivation.
