Scio is a town in Allegany County in New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , the place had 1833 inhabitants.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of ​​91.4  km² , of which 0.09% or 0.1 km² is water.

The town is located in the southern half of Allegany County, north of the Village of Wellsville .

The Genesee River flows through the city northwards and the two tributaries Knight Creek and Vandermark Creek flow here.

New York State Route 19 is a north-south trunk road that runs through the city. Scio is also on the mainline of the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad .

history

The place was first settled around 1805 by Joseph Knight, a minutemen in the American independence movement ; Knights Creek, which flows into the Genesee River near Scio, is named after him. The city was founded in 1823 by detachment from the Town Angelica . Part of the area was later separated when the towns of Amity (1830), Wellsville (1855) and Willing (1851) were formally established .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, 1914 people lived in the city. The population density was 21 people per km². There were 894 housing units at an average of 9.8 per km ². The Scios population was 97.39% White , 0.26% Black or African American , 0.42% Native American , 0.26% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 0.47% said other races belong to and 1.15% named two or more races. 0.37% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Scios were distributed to 729 households out of which 33.7% were living in children under 18 years of age. 59.7% of households are married, 7.8% had a female head of household without a husband and 26.9% did not form families. 19.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.98.

The urban population was divided into 25.9% minors, 8.4% 18–24 year olds, 27.3% 25–44 year olds, 23.8% 45–64 year olds and 14.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 96.9 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 96.5 men.

The median household income in Scio was 32,679 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 38,250 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,242 compared with $ 20,595 for women. Notable residents

Marine Corporal Jason Dunham , a United States Marines soldier who died in the Iraq War , was born in Scio. Dunham was the second recipient of the Medal of Honor in Operation Iraqi Freedom .
