Walker is a member of the Republican Party . From 1993 to 2002 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . Nov. 2, 2010 Walker won the gubernatorial elections in Wisconsin against Democrat Tom Barrett . He succeeded Jim Doyle on January 3, 2011 .

In February 2011, Walker submitted a bill to the Wisconsin state parliament to reduce government employee benefits to help offset the budget. Since the law also contained severe restrictions on the right to collective bargaining for public service unions , protests against Walker with tens of thousands of participants took place in Madison . The Senate Democratic MPs attempted to prevent a vote on the law by crossing the state line into Illinois . In March 2011, Walker overcame this obstacle by separating the law restricting collective bargaining rights from the general budget law. As a result, he circumvented the quorum in the Senate required for budget laws and achieved a majority in both chambers of parliament with the votes of the Republican MPs. A lawsuit about an alleged formal error in the Senate resolution of the law restricting collective bargaining rights for public workers ultimately failed before the Wisconsin Supreme Court .

Because of the restrictions on collective bargaining rights, unions and Democrats launched a voting process against Walker. A good 540,000 signatures were required for the introduction. In mid-January, the organizers submitted around one million signatures, of which around 900,000 were valid. Wisconsin therefore voted on June 5, 2012 on the removal and a possible new governor. As in 2010, the Democrats challenged Tom Barrett . After the trials against Lynn Frazier (North Dakota, 1921) and Gray Davis (California, 2003), it was only the third trial for the election of a governor in US history. Unlike Frazier and Davis, Walker survived the election. In connection with the presidential election in November 2012 , the result was given a symbolic character in the USA.

In the November 2014 gubernatorial elections , Walker was confirmed in office with 52.5 percent of the vote. The Democrat Mary Burke was up against him . He began his second term in January 2015.

In July 2015, he announced that he would run for the Republicans in the 2016 presidential election . After only two percent of Republicans supported him on average, according to surveys, he withdrew his candidacy in September 2015. On March 29, 2016, Walker voted to vote for Ted Cruz .

Walker ran for the third time in the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 . The midterm elections also took place on this date , two years after Donald Trump was elected US President , which gave the Democrats a very good starting position due to President Trump's controversial decisions in some parts of the USA, including those rejected by many Conservatives. In the end he was defeated by his Democratic challenger Tony Evers in a tight race with 48.4 to 49.5%. Walker's mandate ended on January 7, 2019.
