sebamed is the brand name of the medical skin and body care products produced by Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG . The headquarters of Sebapharma is in the Bad Salzig district of Boppard . Heinz Maurer invented soap-free washing bars in the 1950s and founded the company in 1983 to market these hygiene products.

Products are skin cleansing and care products such as shower products , creams, lotions , hair shampoos and deodorants .

history

The doctor Heinz Maurer (1921-2016), who later founded Sebapharma, worked in 1952 as an assistant doctor in the dermatological department of the Bonn University Hospital . The patients who suffered from eczema were not allowed to wash, as normal curd soap destroys the protective acid mantle and thus the healing power of the skin. Maurer, who in his spare time at his brother's company had created a soap-free washing emulsion that had the same pH value as human skin, tested it on patients. The forbidden experiment succeeded, but the ward doctor who had been supported by Maurer lost his job.

After further research by the Koblenz chemist Herbert Manneck, the first soap-free "wash bar" went into production in 1957 under the name Ri. It was so gentle on the skin that even those with skin problems could clean themselves with it without hesitation. Production was initially taken over by Heinz Maurer's brother Willi, who had a factory at Villa Belgrano in Boppard , where he manufactured, among other things, Rei in a tube . Heinz Maurer later took over these workshops. He founded Sebamat Chemie GmbH in 1967 and manufactured the first sebamed products.

From 1968 sebamed became known to dermatologists , pharmacists , druggists and consumers in Germany through medical marketing and from 1971 it was also exported. In 1983 Maurer founded Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG, a sales company in which the subsidiaries Herzpunkt Pharma, Maurer Pharma and Sebamat Chemie GmbH are combined. A year later, new warehouse and production buildings were built in the Bad Salzig district of Boppard , and by the end of 1985 the remaining corporate divisions had moved from downtown Boppard to the Bad Salzig location. In 1984 around 150 people worked at Sebapharma.

Sebamed products are now available in over 80 countries, including Indonesia and Australia. Heinz Maurer was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate in 2010 for his entrepreneurial, social and cultural commitment. In 2012, Sebapharma had around 200 employees. He is the holder of the university medal "Bene merenti" of the University of Regensburg .

Heinz Maurer died on April 22, 2016. In November 1991 the city of Boppard made him an honorary citizen and in 1992 he received the Federal Cross of Merit. In 2002 he was honored for his life's work at the World Dermatology Congress in Paris.
