Sebastian von Bergen , also Sebastianus a Bergen (* 1554 in Hamburg ; † October 24, 1623 ibid) was a German lawyer, statesman and Hamburg mayor .

Life

After visiting the Gelehrtenschule the Johanneum in Hamburg in 1575 he moved into the University of Leiden ( Holland ) to law to study, went in 1578 to the University of Rostock and studied from 1580 at the University of Wittenberg . Here he was entrusted with an extraordinary legal professorship at the university by the Saxon Elector August 1584 after a brilliantly passed licentiate examination in law (1583) .

In 1585 he was called back to Hamburg as State Secretary , where he worked as an envoy in state affairs at foreign courts. He also took part in the Reichstag in Regensburg in 1608 . The negotiations he led led to the detachment of Hamburg, which was striving for a position as an internationally neutral staging area in north-western Europe, from the German Hanseatic League .

In 1601 he was councilor in Hamburg and in 1614 mayor of the city. In 1610 he founded an extensive collection for the library of the Johanneum, today's Hamburg State and University Library , and wanted to donate a larger sum to it in his will. Bergen also wrote various writings during his time.
