The manatee from above

The manatee is a German garbage collection ship that is to be used as a prototype of a garbage collection fleet to clean off plastic waste near the coast and river mouths . The ship was launched in September 2016 and christened on September 25 at the German Maritime Day in Kiel .

background

The registered association One Earth - One Ocean has been cleaning the oceans from plastic waste since it was founded . In cooperation with the ZIM project Marine Littering , the manatee was planned to combat the littering of the oceans with suitable industrial maritime system solutions. Ten German medium-sized companies are involved in this ZIM project. The construction of the 250,000 euro ship was financed by donations.

description

The prototype of the refuse collection ship is a twelve meter long and ten meter wide, modular catamaran with a draft of 0.6 meters. It is made of seawater-resistant aluminum and therefore weighs only around six tons. The total weight, including the garbage collected, can be up to eleven tons. It is driven by two outboard motors with a nominal output of 44 kW .

Close-meshed safety nets attached under the ship can pick up plastic debris floating on the surface of the water while the catamaran moves at a speed of around two knots . Two to three tons of plastic can be collected from the water per trip. For research purposes, water samples can be taken in parallel to obtain information on the concentration of microplastics .

The manatee was built and equipped as a work ship in accordance with the regulations of the professional association for transport and traffic management under the supervision of DNV GL . If necessary, the catamaran can be dismantled and packed in sea containers and shipped to its place of use.

The shipyard is the Lübeck Yacht Trave Schiff GmbH in Lübeck , client of the One Earth - One Ocean association .
