Seidel (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seidel (from Middle High German sīdel ) was a measure of volume for liquids and a measure of grain . The amount was different depending on the region. In the spelling Seitel it was a Hungarian measure of measure. In German Seidel was like a pint and Seidlein the pint . As a Bavarian liquid measure, the Seidel corresponds to half a liter or half a "measure", previously 0.535 liters. As a Bohemian mine size, the Seidel held 4 buckets.

Beer measure

  • In Austria (especially Vienna and the surrounding area) the term Seidel is still used for beer (but not for wine or non-alcoholic beverages). 1 Seidel corresponds to 0.3 liters. In Graz and the surrounding area, however, 0.33 liters is referred to as a “glass of beer”.
  • In Bavaria the term is still used for half a measure of beer, i.e. 0.5 l (before the introduction of the decimal system, 0.535 l) , or as a term for the corresponding earthen beer mug ("beer mug").
