The princess of the night ( Selenicereus pteranthus ) is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family (Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Reina de la Noche".

description

Selenicereus pteranthus grows epiphytically with spread to drooping shoots. The strong blue-green to slightly purple-colored shoots are strongly square to hexagonal and reach a diameter of 2.5 to 5 centimeters. The white woolen areoles are 2 to 2.5 centimeters apart. The resulting one to five hard, conical thorns are 1 to 3 millimeters long.

The slender flowers reach a diameter of 25 to 30 centimeters and have a strong scent. Their outer bracts are more or less purple-brown, the inner ones are white or light cream-colored. The pericarpel and the corolla are covered with numerous scales and white hairs. The spherical red fruits have a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters.
