John Selwin Calverley , DL (born July 4, 1855 in Leeds , † December 30, 1900 ) was a British sailor .

successes

Selwin Calverley, who sailed for the Royal Victoria Yacht Club , took part in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris . With his yacht Brynhild he started the regatta in the boat class over 20 tons , which consisted of four boats and was sailed over 40 nautical miles in just one race off Le Havre . The Brynhild was the first boat to cross the finish line, but after adjusting the times due to the different weights of the participating boats, he was put back in second place in the overall ranking.

After attending Harrow School and studying at Trinity College , Cambridge , he was appointed to the Inner Temple Bar in 1882 . He was Captain of the 4th Battalion of the Essex Regiment of the British Army and later Justice of the Peace and also Deputy Lieutenant of West Riding of Yorkshire . Calverley was married to Sybil Disraeli, the niece of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli . Just four months after the Olympic regatta, Calverley died in his native Leeds.
