Here he defeated the 1985 world champion Jon Rønningen from Norway in the final and also left the 1984 Olympic champion Atsuji Miyahara from Japan behind.

In 1987, Sergei Djudjajew had to realize that a world title in the former Soviet Union was no guarantee for a long career. He was never again a Soviet champion and therefore did not make any further appearances at the international championships. 1987 started for the USSR in flyweight Andrij Kalaschnykow at the European championship and Alexander Ignatenko at the world championship.
