Benur Paschajan

Benur Paschajan , Armenian Բենուր Փաշայան , (* 14. November 1959 in Asawreti in Akhalkalaki , Georgian SSR ; † 13. December 2019 in Yerevan , Armenia ) was a Soviet wrestler and Armenian sports official . He was Greco-Roman style flyweight world champion in 1982 and 1983 .

Career

Benur Paschajan began wrestling as a teenager in Yerevan . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. In 1977 he was Soviet junior champion and then used in the Junior World Championship that year in Las Vegas. There he won the paper weight ahead of Todor Jordanow from Bulgaria and Takahashi Yamagishi from Japan . In 1978 he was again the Soviet junior paper weight champion before his Armenian compatriot Nesserjan. His next use took place at the Junior World Championships in 1979 in Haparanda , where he won the flyweight world title in front of Heiko Röll from the GDR and Stig A. Lundell from Sweden secured.

Benur Paschajan was also soon able to establish himself in the top field among the seniors in the USSR. With Wachtang Blagidse , however, he had a wrestler in front of him in 1980, who also became Olympic and European champions that year .

1981 benur Paschajan was at the European Championships in Gothenburg used flyweight and was there with wins over Heiko Röll, Stig A. Lundell, Leszek Majkowski , Poland, Taisto Halonen , Finland and Lajos Racz , Hungary with zero defects points European champion . At the 1981 World Cup, Wachtang Blagidze was used again. Benur Paschajan also went to the flyweight world championships in Bucharest in 1981 and won there before Nicu Gângă from Romania , Bang Dae-du from South Korea and Atsuji Miyahara from Japan.

In 1982 Benur Paschajan first became European flyweight champion in Varna ahead of Gheorghe Stefan , Romania, Roman Kierpacz , Poland and Lajos Rácz and also won the world title in this weight class in Katowice ahead of Ljubomir Zekow , Bulgaria, Bang Dae-du , Lajos Rácz and Stefan Marian from Rumania.

In 1983 Benur Paschajan started only at the world championship in Kiev and won the flyweight world championship there again after 1982. He left Erol Kemah from Turkey , Ljubomir Zekow , Taisto Halonen and Roman Kierpacz behind.

At the Soviet championship in 1984 Benur Paschajan was beaten by Minsaid Tasetdinow , who was then used in the European championship. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , no Soviet wrestler could start because these games were boycotted by the Soviet Union . Benur Paschajan tried in 1985 to qualify for participation in the World Cup and the European Championship, but could no longer prevail against Minsaid Tasetdinov. Benur Paschajan went off the mat as the winner of every international championship that he contested.

He ended his international wrestling career in 1986 and completed a sports teacher training course. He then worked in Yerevan as a wrestling trainer. In 1999 and 2000 he was President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia .
