Sergei Wiktorowitsch Dolmatow ( Russian Сергей Викторович Долматов , scientific transliteration Sergej Viktorovič Dolmatov ; born February 20, 1959 in Kisseljowsk , Kemerovo Oblast ) is a Russian chess master .

Life

Along with Artur Yusupov, Dolmatov is one of the most successful students of the Russian star coach Mark Dworezki . Under Dworezkis care Dolmatow was two times (1978 and 1979) junior vice European champion and 1978 youth world champion in Graz . For this success he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . He celebrated a number of brilliant victories in the 1980s. He won tournaments in Amsterdam 1979, Bucharest 1981, Frunze 1983, Barcelona 1983, Tallinn 1985, Sochi 1988, Klaipėda 1988 ( USSR First League ), Moscow 1989 and Hastings 1989/1990. At the strong tournament in Tashkent in 1980 he came second after Alexander Beliavsky , and also at the strong tournament in Minsk in 1982, second behind Vitaly Zeschkowski . He qualified for five USSR championships during this period . In 1984 FIDE awarded him the title of Grand Master . Garry Kasparov chose in 1987 Dolmatov as his second in the world championship match in Seville against Anatoly Karpov .

1990 Dolmatow succeeded in the interzonal tournament in Manila (shared 5th place) the jump to the candidates tournament . In the first contest between the candidates, Dolmatov met his longtime friend and Dvoretski classmate Artur Yusupov. The 1991 competition in Wijk aan Zee ended after the regular game 4: 4 (+1 = 6 −1), so that a rapid play-off had to decide: Jussupow prevailed here with 2.5: 1.5 and Dolmatow was eliminated. 1997 Dolmatow won together with Pawel Tregubow and Sergei Rublewski in Krasnodar . In 1999 he finished second in Calcutta and won the Anibal Open in Linares in 2000 . Dolmatov's Elo rating is 2560 (as of July 2014), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played a rated game since the 2009 Russian team championship. Dolmatov achieved his highest rating of 2630 in July 1993.

Dolmatow won the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila with the Russian national team and reached third place at the 1993 World Team Championship in Lucerne , where he won the individual ranking on the fourth board together with the Chinese Li Wenliang .

Sergei Dolmatow won the Russian team championship with Ladja Azov in 1996 . He took part in the European Club Cup eight times and won it in 1979 with Burevestnik , 1997 with Ladja Azow and 2001 with Norilski Nikel Norilsk . From 1991 to 1993 he played in the German Chess League with the SF Dortmund-Brackel .
