The real saw perch (Serraninae) are like their relatives, the grouper (Epinephelinae) a group of partly very large perch living on the coasts of tropical and subtropical seas. Only the Caribbean hamlet perch ( Hypoplectrus ) and the genus Serranus remain smaller at 13 centimeters and 7 to 28 centimeters respectively. The king saw bass ( Serranus atricauda ), the saw bass ( Serranus cabrilla ), the brown saw bass ( Serranus hepatus ) and the writing perch ( Serranus scriba ) also live in the Mediterranean .

features

Compared to the groupers , the scales of the actual sawfish are usually larger and fewer than 80 inclined rows of scales stand between the rear edge of the gill cover and the caudal fin base (more than 80 in the grouper). The scales along the lateral line are conspicuous, unequal in size and their number (67-77) corresponds to the number of rows of scales on the body. The maxillary of the actual perch is not scaly (scaly in most anthias ).
