Toxicological data
As far as possible and customary, SI units are used. Unless otherwise noted, the data given apply to standard conditions .

Sethoxydim is a mixture of several isomeric chemical compounds from the group of cyclohexanediones .

Extraction and presentation

Sethoxydim can be obtained by reacting ethyl mercaptan with crotonal , followed by reaction with acetone , dimethyl malonate , hydrolysis reagents, butyryl chloride and hydroxyethylamine .

properties

Sethoxydim is an odorless liquid / oil that is sparingly soluble in water. It is very unstable in water.

use

Sethoxydim is used as a selective herbicide against annual and perennial grasses. It is applied as a post-emergence herbicide and requires the addition of an oil adjuvant or nonionic surfactant for maximum effectiveness. According to the manufacturer sethoxydim can against Bahia grass ( Paspalum notatum ), blood crabgrass ( Digitaria sanguinalis ), downy brome ( Bromus tectorum ), Elymus repens ( Elytrigia repens ), ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum ), wild oat ( Avena spp. ) And Panicum ( Panicum spp. ). The effect is based (similar to the herbicide fluazifop-P-butyl ) on the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA-carboxylase , an enzyme for the catalysis of an early step of the fatty acid synthesis of the plants.

In 2002 the substance was not included in the list of plant protection active ingredients approved in the European Union . Plant protection products with the active ingredient sethoxydim are not approved in any EU country, nor are they in Switzerland.
