Setti Fatma in the Ourika Valley |
Setti Fatma (sometimes also written Sti Fadma ; Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⵜⵉ ⴼⴰⴹⵎⴰ Sti Faḍma , Arabic ستي فاطمة) Is a mountain resort with about 1,500 inhabitants and capital of a multi still quite untouched and mountain villages municipality (commune rurale) with about 24,000 inhabitants in the province of Al Haouz in the region Marrakech-Safi in the High Atlas in Morocco .
location
Setti Fatma is located on the Oued Ourika in the upper area of the Ourika Valley at an altitude of about 1450 m . The city of Marrakech is located about 65 km (driving distance) northwest.
population
The inhabitants of the place are almost exclusively of Berber descent; The regional dialect of the Central Atlas Tamazight is spoken , but also Moroccan Arabic .
economy
Until the 1960s and 1970s, the residents of Setti Fatma lived as a self-sufficient source of income from their small, mostly terraced fields and from raising cattle (goats, sheep, chickens). Some men looked for work in Marrakech or in the cities of the north. Only with the increase in trekking tourism were new sources of income opened up.
history
In the absence of written records - as is common in the Berber regions of the Maghreb - nothing is known about the earlier history of the place. However, it can be assumed that the area originally used by hunters and cattle nomads has been inhabited for several centuries. In 1995, a flood destroyed several houses near the river.
Attractions
- In the last decades of the 20th century, the original single-storey clay houses in the town were almost all replaced by two- or even three-storey houses made of hollow blocks and with stairs and floor ceilings made of concrete .
- The Oued Ourika, which ripples gently in summer and early autumn, offers an impressive spectacle after the winter rains until early spring.
- About 2 km southeast of the village there are several small waterfalls (cascades), which are particularly impressive after the rains in winter and in early spring.
- Starting from Setti Fatma (or Imlil ), one or more day hiking and trekking tours in the mountain regions of the High Atlas (including Oukaïmeden ) can be undertaken. It is also possible to climb the 4,167 m high Jbel Toubkal , on the north-eastern flank of which the Ourika River rises.
