Sextonia rubra is a large tree in the laurel family from more northern South America . It is one of only two species in the genus Sextonia .
description
Sextonia rubra grows as an evergreen tree to over 25–30 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches about 70-150 centimeters. There are root approaches .
The simple, alternate and bare leaves are in clusters at the branch ends. They are short-stalked, with entire margins and obovate, wedge-shaped at the base, and blunt to rounded at the tip and partly indented. The somewhat unusual leaves are dark olive on the top and rusty reddish on the underside.
Axillary, paniculate inflorescences are formed. The hermaphroditic, stalked and yellowish flowers have a simple flower envelope . There are small bracts in each case. The 6 small, upright tepals stand in two unequal circles, the outer one is smaller. There are 9 short, almost sessile, fringed-papillae, hairy stamens inside at the base in 3 circles and 3 small, hairy staminodes. The stamens in the 3rd circle have two small glands at the base. The bald ovary with a relatively short stylus with a capricious, blunt stigma is in the middle of the cup-shaped flower cup .
There are berries in / on a " fruit cups formed".
Taxonomy
The first description of Basionyms Ocotea rubra done in 1889 by Carl Christian Mez in Jahrb. Royally. Bot. Garden Berlin 5: 258. The division into the new genus Sextonia to Sextonia rubra takes place in 1997 by Henk van der Werff in Novon 7: 438 (publ. 1998). Another synonym is Nectandra rubra (Mez) CKAllen .
use
The beautiful, medium-heavy, medium-hard wood is used in a variety of ways, it is known as Determa or Red Louro . It absorbs very little moisture, so it is not treatable and it is quite durable and resistant.
