Life
Seymour Lipton attended City College of New York , and studied dentistry at Columbia University from 1923 to 1927 . As a sculptor, Lipton was an autodidact . He started with figural sculptures in 1932 until he only worked abstractly from 1945. After 1943 he had various teaching positions for artistic training.
His art was characterized by the fact that he worked directly in the sheet metal and in the liquid alloys. This method produced organically twisting sculptures with richly bronzed structural effects. During the 1940s, he created heavy jagged shapes that addressed intellectual conflict. In the 1950s, his art became calmer, he created more dignified forms influenced by plant and animal life.
In the 1950s, Lipton's art received international attention and recognition. He exhibited internationally. In 1959 Seymour Lipton participated in documenta II in Kassel in the plastic department . In 1975 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
