Sgorigrad [ zɡɔriˌɡrat ] ( bulg . Згориград even Zgorigrad) is a village in northwestern Bulgaria , in the Vratsa Province , in the town of Vratsa, 4 km southwest of the town of Vratsa . The name means "the city behind the mountains".
history
The settling basin of the Mir mine in Sgorigrad broke on May 1, 1966 after it was flooded. The number of deaths is given as> 96,> 300 or 488.
The dam was 12 m high and held back 220,000 m³ of sedimentation sludge from the production of lead , zinc , copper and silver . After heavy rains, the water level rose until the dam crest was flooded, whereupon the dam was washed away. The resulting tidal wave moved 6 to 8 km through the valley and half destroyed the village of Zgorigrad, which was 1 km below.
The waterfall “ Borow Kamak ” is well worth seeing near the site of the accident . An adventure trail for tourists starts exactly at the site of the former sedimentation basin.
After the 1985 disaster in Stava , both events are commemorated together.
Since 2012 the place name to the Sgorigrad-Nunatak in Graham Land in Antarctica.
