history

Shadow Mk.1 from the Can-Am series in Hockenheim

In 1971 Don Nichols founded Advanced Vehicle Systems , but named his cars Shadow. The first Shadow was the Mk.1, an advanced Can-Am car with small tires for low drag . In 1974 Jackie Oliver won the Can-Am Championship in a Shadow DN4A Chevrolet, while his team-mate George Follmer came second.

In 1973 , the team made their Formula 1 debut at the South African Grand Prix with a car designed by Tony Southgate . Two cars with drivers Jackie Oliver and George Follmer were used and Graham Hill started as a privateer.

In 1974 Peter Revson - son of the founder of the cosmetics company Revlon - had a fatal accident in a test drive for the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami in a Shadow Ford DN3 . The cause of the accident was a suspension defect.

At the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix , the team achieved its first and only victory with eventual world champion Alan Jones , after his predecessor Tom Pryce collided with a marshal in a Shadow DN8 in a Shadow DN8 in 1977 and was killed by the fire extinguisher a few months earlier was.

During the 1980 season , the team entered into a cooperation with Theodore Racing , but the team withdrew from Formula 1 after the French Grand Prix for financial and sporting reasons. Theodore had long been pursuing an independent Formula 1 project for the 1981 season and no longer gave the Shadow DN12 great development prospects.
