The Prince's Sword - Shadowless Sword ( kor.  무영검 , Hanja  無影 劍 , English: Shadowless Sword ) is a South Korean martial arts film from 2005 by director Kim Young-jun. The film, shot in China, is about the last prince of the Balhae kingdom , who is hiding in a small village and has to go to war because of the Kite invasion .

action

The film begins with a flashback to the year 926. In this year the capital Sanggyeong of the multi-ethnic empire Balhae falls to the Kitan (“Georan”). They set up Dongranguk ("Dongdan"), a puppet state led by the Kitan and supported by traitors. The surviving members of the people of Balhae unite and fight to reclaim their homeland. The villain Gun, one of the traitors and deputy commander of the dreaded death blade army of the Kitan, seeks with the help of the warrior Mae Yung-ok to kill all the princes of Balhae in order to establish his own empire. For this he is ready to kill his commander and to violate the orders of the leaders of the Kitan.

The film describes how a Balhae fighter, So-ha, is dispatched to rescue the last surviving prince of the Balhae royal family, Jung-hyun. He is to become the new king of Balhae and thus contribute to the first step towards liberation and thus to the founding of New Balhae. However, the prince has lived a life in exile for many years and has repressed everything that reminded him of his glorious origins and past. He leads a vicious and carefree life as a fence who deals in stolen art objects. When So-ha shows up to lead him to his destiny, he is not at all enthusiastic at first. Only in the course of the journey, during which So-ha saves his life several times, does he become aware of his past and his destiny.

criticism

“Conventional martial arts film that entertains thanks to two extremely agile swordsmen. The few breaks between the fights are used for rambling palaver about the establishment of a united Korea. "
