The Shala ( Albanian also Shalë and Lumi i Shalës ) is a river in the Albanian Alps in northern Albania . It drains the central part of the mountains to the south and flows after around 35 km into the artificially dammed Drin or Koman reservoir .

The upper Shala valley from the air

The river flows in a mighty valley running from north to south, which, together with the Ropojana valley to the north, divides the Albanian Alps in two. The sources of the Shala - sometimes still called the Theth River here - lie in an impressive trough valley below the steep face of the Qafa e Pejës pass leading to Montenegro . The valley is surrounded by several high two thousand meter peaks , including the Radohima (2568 m) in the west and the Maja e Popllukës (2578 m) and the Jezerca (2694 m) in the east. The scattered settlement of Theth extends over several kilometers in the valley basin , where the mountain stream drives two small hydroelectric power stations and a mill. Further down, he has dug a gorge around 50 meters deep, some of which is only a few meters wide. The mountain slopes on both sides are very steep here, but recede again after the confluence with the Përroi i Zi near Nderlysa.

The slopes in the following valley section are inhabited on both sides. Almost a dozen settlements - including Nicaj, Gimaj, Abat, Lekaj, Pecaj, Lotaj, Vuksanaj and Nënmavriq - together with the settlements further up in the valley formed a widely dispersed community like the river and valley and the clan of the inhabitants Shala was called. Only the Breglumi administrative center is located in this section in the valley floor.

Below this section the valley narrows again and is practically uninhabited. The shala runs here in a deep V-shaped incision. At the confluence with the Shtupa, the direction of flow changes to the east. After a few 100 meters it flows into a narrow arm of the Koman reservoir , which stretches up the Lesniqa Valley for dozens of kilometers . This part of the Shala, which is now flooded, was also called Lesniqa earlier .

The Shala is suitable for kayaking , although certain passages with smaller waterfalls are technically very difficult.
