Shane Cooper (musician)
Shane Cooper (born May 28, 1985 in Port Elizabeth ) is a South African jazz musician ( bass , composition ).
Live and act
Cooper first learned the guitar and played in the school band when he was 14. Then he became interested in jazz and switched to bass; he played in Gerard O'Brien's local band at the age of 16. He studied at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2008.
Cooper was part of Kyle Shepherd's trio , Reza Khota's quartet, and Card on Spokes . He also worked with musicians such as Louis Moholo , Malcolm Braff , Zim Ngqawana , Feya Faku , Talvin Singh , Soweto Kinch , Marcus Wyatt , Nils Berg (The Stoner, Cinemascope), Afrika Mkhize, Spoek Mathambo and Okmalumkoolkat. He also played in bands like Closet Snare .
In 2013 he presented his debut album Oscillations with his own band . He can also be heard with Kyle Shepherd, Kesivan Naidoo and the Swiss Andreas Tschopp and Marc Stucky in the multinational band Skyjack on their album of the same name. As a film composer he wrote the music for the documentaries Forerunners by Simon Wood and Port Nolloth: Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Felix Seuffert; he also produced Kyle Shepherd's soundtrack for Noem My Skollie . With the trio of Shepherd and the soloists Mthunzi Mvubu and Lionel Loueke he gave several concerts at the 2016 SWR New Jazz Meeting , which were documented on the double CD Sound Portraits from Contemporary Africa . In 2017 he founded his quintet Mabuta with the saxophonist Sisonke Xonti, the trumpeter Robin Fassie-Kock, the keyboardist Bokani Dyer and the drummer Marlon Witbooi. In 2018, Cooper curated the Bern Jazz Workshop .
Prizes and awards
In 2013 Cooper was named “Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year” in the field of jazz. His album Oscillations received a South African Music Award (SAMA) in 2014 .
