Shanghang ( Chinese  上杭县 , pinyin Shàngháng Xiàn ) is a Chinese district of the prefecture-level city Longyan in the province of Fujian . It has an area of ​​2,879 square kilometers and had around 500,000 inhabitants at the end of 2012.

Shanghang is located in the southwest of Fujian Province. It borders Changting and Liancheng in the north, Yongding and Jiaoling in the south, Xinluo in the east, and Wuping in the west. The relief slopes from northeast to southwest; Shanghang is located on the southern foothills of the Wuyi Shan Mountains and is therefore hilly to mountainous. The highest peak in Shanghang is the Meihua Shan with 1778  m . Here is also the 7400 hectare Meihua Shan nature reserve with rare plant and animal species.

The largest river in Shanghang is the Ting Jiang , which flows through the county for a length of 85 kilometers. Its tributaries in Shanghang are Jiuxian He , Huangtan He , Cai Xi , Yuanfeng Xi , Lai Xi , Anxiang Xi, and Xiadu Xi .

Shanghang has a subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 20.2 ° C. The average temperatures are 11.8 ° C in winter, 20.1 ° C in spring, 27.3 ° C in summer and 21.7 ° C in autumn. The extremes of 2018 were -0.9 ° C on February 7th and 37.3 ° C on July 10th. An average of 1651 millimeters of precipitation falls annually, with summer being the wettest month and winter being the wettest month. Every year, Shanghang has around 1760 hours of sunshine. The greatest threats to agriculture in Shanghang are typhoons, heavy rain, hail and heat.

At the end of 2012, Shanghang had a population of around 500,000. The 2000 population census showed a total population of 433,700 people in 111,352 households, of whom 214,956 were men and 218,744 women.

Economy and Transport

Shanghang's economy thrives on the generation of electrical energy in hydropower plants, cement production, wood processing and mining. There are deposits of gold , limestone , manganese , copper , sulfur , iron , tungsten and rare earths . Almost 16 tons of gold and 8000 tons of copper were mined in the Zijin Shan mine in 2007; it is one of the largest gold producers in China. The mining company Zijin Mining is headquartered in Linjiang Township .

Shanghang is linked to the rest of China by the Longyan-Changting Highway , National Roads 205 and 319, and Provincial Road 206. The Ganzhou-Longyan Railway touches Shanghang in the northeast.

The site of the Gutian Conference (Dec. 1929 - Jan. 1930) ( Gutian huiyihuizhi古田 会议 会址) from the time of the Central Soviet has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-18) since 1961 . In addition, there is a stele with poems by Wang Shouren from the Ming Dynasty and a Confucius Temple from the Qing Dynasty in Shanghang .
