history

In the marshes between Shannon and Linton , around 18 km northeast, New Zealand flax thrived on an area of around 5800 hectares, but falling prices on the world market and a disease in the plants that turned them yellow led to the abandonment of flax production and to drain the swamps in the 1920s.
In 1924, the Mangahao Power Station, just under 4 km southeast of Shannon , went online. With an output of 19,200 kW, it was the most powerful power plant in the country at the time.
