Shannon is a place in the Horowhenua District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The place got its name in honor of George Vance Shannon , a director of the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company .

geography

The place is located around 14 km northeast of Levin , around 14 km southeast of Foxton and around 27 km southwest of Palmerston North , between the Manawatu River and the mountains of the Tararua Range .

history

The place was founded on March 8, 1887 by the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company as a railroad settlement and focused on flax production in the early 20th century. In the marshes between Shannon and Linton , around 18 km northeast, New Zealand flax thrived on an area of ​​around 5800 hectares, but falling prices on the world market and a disease in the plants that turned them yellow led to the abandonment of flax production and to drain the swamps in the 1920s.

In 1924, the Mangahao Power Station, just under 4 km southeast of Shannon , went online. With an output of 19,200 kW, it was the most powerful power plant in the country at the time.

In the 2013 census, the town had 1239 inhabitants, 9.6% less than in the 2006 census.

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 57 runs through Shannon and connects the town with Levin in the southwest and Palmerston North in the northeast. A secondary road going west connects the town with Foxton .

Rail transport

By Shannon runs parallel to State Highway 57, the railway line of the North Island Main Trunk Railway , which has a station with two sidings in the place.

Education

With the Shannon School, the place has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2014, 141 students attended the school.

Sports

The place has a rugby club, several netball teams and a 14-hole golf course.
