Shari Lewis
Shari Lewis (born January 17, 1933 in New York City , † August 2, 1998 in Los Angeles ) was an American puppeteer and ventriloquist . During her 40+ years in television, Lewis has received multiple Emmys .
Life
Lewis was born in New York in 1933 as the daughter of the Jewish couple Abraham and Ann Hurwitz. Abraham Hurwitz was a well-known magician in New York. Early in her career, Lewis performed various hand puppets in nightclubs. In 1952 she won the talent show Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts . As a result, Lewis hosted various children's programs on local television. In 1956, Lewis appeared on the children's show Captain Kangaroo with Lamb Chop , a sock puppet depicting a female lamb . Four years later, Lewis got her own children's show on NBC . The Shari Lewis Show was broadcast on the morning program from October 1, 1960 to 1963.
Lewis has been immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1976 (6743 Hollywood Blvd).
Lewis was married twice and had a daughter, Mallory Lewis, with her second husband. In 1998 Lewis died of complications from cancer. Mallory Lewis has performed with Lamb Chop since her mother's death.
