genealogy

Sultan Sharif Ali was a son of Imam Hassan ibn Ali and originally one of the emirs of Mecca . (His full title read: "Al-Amīr Sharīf 'Alī bin Sharīf' Ajlān bin Sharīf Rumaithah bin Sharīf Muhammad Abū Numā'ī Al-Awwal") He became the ancestor of the royal families of Brunei and Sulu .

Succession to the throne

Sharif Ali came to the throne in 1425 after Sultan Ahmad died without a male heir. The appointment of Sharif Ali was not only based on the appointment of the royal family, but also with the consent of the citizens of Brunei and royal advisers. Sharif Ali was chosen because of his knowledge of Islam . Already under Sultan Ahmad he functioned as a royal 'ālim ( Arabic عَـالِـم, Religious scholar). Through his marriage to Puteri Ratna Kesuma , the daughter of Sultan Ahmad, he gained a permanent position as sultan and scholar. He was the first Sultan of Brunei who could not trace his ancestry back to the previous sultans.

government

Sharif Ali ruled Brunei according to Islamic principles and was considered a very godly ( Taqwā ) ruler. Because of his popularity he was given the honorary name "Sultan Berkat". As the first sultan, he built a mosque (Masjid). He also strengthened the fortifications of Brunei by ordering his subjects to build a stone fortress and city in what is now Kota Batu (Kota Batu Archaeological Park). After his death in 1432 his son Sulayman succeeded him to the throne.

legacy

The Sultan introduced many Sharia laws and standardized the administrative rules through Islamic law. He also left the orientation of the qibla (direction of prayer, Arabic قِـبْـلَـة) and passed a law banning the consumption of pork, which was punishable by death.

In addition to religious ordinances, a number of other achievements can be traced back to Ali's reign, including the introduction of an emblem and banner : the " Tunggul Alam Bernaga ", which are still in use today. The emblem is supposed to represent a Seychelles palm (coco de mer), among other things .

The mausoleum of Sharif Ali is close to the Brunei Museum and the mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah , 5th Sultan of Brunei. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah (the 29th Sultan of Brunei) built a large mosque called " Masjid Sultan Sharif Ali " in appreciation for his contributions. The mosque was inaugurated in 1986 and is located in Kampong Sengkurong ; about 16 km from Bandar Seri Begawan . Several other institutions in Brunei are named after Sultan Sharif Alis, including the Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School in Salambigar ( Jalan Muara ) and the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University .
