Sharon Jones Lafaye (* 4. May 1956 in Augusta . Georgia ; † 18th November 2016 in Cooperstown , New York ) was an American Soul - and radio - singer . She gained notoriety above all from 2002 through the release of several albums with the "Dap-Kings" ("Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings").
biography
As a child, Sharon Jones sang gospel songs in the church choir . She took an early interest in the music of James Brown , who had also grown up in Augusta. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Brooklyn , where she was hoping for a recording deal. Instead, she sang in the accompanying choir for others and worked, among other things, as a prison guard.
In 1996 she caught the eye of Gabriel Roth and Philippe Lehman , the operators of the music label Desco Records . Sharon Jones was one of the accompanists when the band "Soul Providers" recorded. At Desco, Jones released several singles. In 2000 Desco was discontinued.
In 2002 Gabriel Roth founded the label Daptone Records with Neal Sugarman ( The Sugarman Three ) with the house band “The Dap-Kings”, which essentially emerged from the “Soul Providers”. With this band in the background, Sharon Jones recorded several albums ("Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings"), which were increasingly successful.
In 2013, Sharon Jones was diagnosed with biliary tract cancer. Because of this cancer, the singer had to cancel both the release of her album "Give the People What They Want" and the planned tour in June of that year. After finishing chemotherapy and shortly before the postponed album was released on January 14, 2014, Sharon Jones confirmed that she would return to the stage. The stage comeback was also seen in the 2015 film Miss Sharon Jones! documented.
Sharon Jones died of pancreatic cancer on November 18, 2016 .
