The Shingwedzi ( Tshivenda : Tshingwedzi; Xitsonga : Xingwidzi; Afrikaans : Shingwedzirivier; Portuguese : Rio Shingwidzi) is a river that flows through the Limpopo provinces in South Africa and Gaza in Mozambique . It is a left tributary of the Lepelle (Olifants River or Olifantsrivier until 2005) and its northernmost tributary. It is not water-bearing all year round, but only seasonal. An ecological problem is the agriculturally and industrially induced accumulation of pollutants in the river, as well as the overgrazing of surrounding areas.
River course
The Shingwedzi flows into the salt pan level southeast of the Soutpansberg mountain range . Its springs are located about 40 km southeast of the district capital Vhembes , Thohoyandou . The Shingwedzi flows through the plateau-like regions of the Bushveld and thus reaches the Kruger National Park . Other important tributaries of the Shingwedzi Basin are the Mandzoro , Mphongolo , Phugwane and Gole . The water from Shisha , Tshamidzi , Bububu and Dzombo continues to flow into the basin.
The river is dammed in two places. The damming is done on the one hand by the Kanniedood Dam in the Kruger National Park and on the other hand by the Dreiländereck Dam (South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe ), which stops the Mphongolo's inflow . In Mozambique, the river bends in a southerly direction and then flows south-eastwards. Downstream it passes the surroundings of a reservoir formed by the barrier structure of the Massingir dam and ultimately flows into the Lepelle about 12 km behind it, which pours its water into the Ind .
Climate in the catchment area
The Shingwedzi river basin is relatively small, with an area of about 5300 km². The climate is considered to be hot and dry. The low rainfall in the catchment area is only between 400 and 650 mm on an annual average. The temperatures fluctuate between 2.4 ° C in winter and 40.8 ° C in summer. The catchment area is frost-free.
