The Shoprite Group of Companies is a South African holding of retail companies . It is Africa 's largest grocery retailer. The group operates 2,689 branches, franchises and supermarkets in 15 countries in Africa under different brands. The company's headquarters are in Cape Town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa . Shoprite Holdings Limited is a public limited company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with secondary listings on the Namibian and Zambian stock exchanges.

In 2015, the company was ranked 107th on the list of the world's largest retailers and number 1 in Africa and the Middle East. In 2018, sales were approximately $ 11 billion and the number of employees was 147,478.

history

The Shoprite group of companies was founded in 1979 and has been listed on the stock exchange since 1986. In 1990 Shoprite expanded to Namibia . In 1998 the national supermarket chain Checkers acquired it . In 1995 the first store was opened in Lusaka ( Zambia ). In the same year the company acquired the distributor Sentra , which enabled the company to expand into franchising. In 1997, Shoprite acquired OK Bazaars for the sum of one rand from SABMiller and expanded the company to include 157 supermarkets and 146 furniture stores. In 2000 the group opened their first supermarkets in Zimbabwe and Uganda . Two years later, the company acquired the Madagascar stores of the French retail chain Champion . In the same year, the company bought three Score Supermarket supermarkets in Tanzania and opened the first hypermarket outside South Africa in Mauritius . In 2005 it took over the Foodworlds chain and opened its first store in Nigeria . On April 19, 2012, Shoprite became the first South African retailer to enter the Democratic Republic of the Congo and opened a supermarket in Kinshasa . In 2019 Shoprite expanded to Kenya .
