Short Track World Championships 2004

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2004 Short Track World Championships took place from March 19 to 21, 2004 in Gothenburg . The title fights were held for the first time in Sweden. The host was the International Skating Union (ISU).

A total of twelve competitions were held. There was an all-around event for women and men as well as individual races over 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m. The eight best placed runners in the all-round competition after these three routes also competed over 3000 m. In addition, there were relay competitions, over 3000 m for women and 5000 m for men. The results achieved over the four individual routes flowed into the all-around competition. The first place in an individual race got 34 points, the second 21, the third 13, the fourth eight, the fifth five, the sixth three, the seventh two and the eighth one. However, points were only awarded if the runner reached the final. No points were awarded in the event of a disqualification. The addition of the points scored by a runner resulted in the final ranking in the all-around event.

The South Korean athletes once again dominated the title fights. Choi Eun-kyung and Ahn Hyun-soo each won five titles. Wang Meng won the only gold medal that did not go to South Korea. The Canadian team withdrew all athletes on the last day of the competition after Alanna Kraus and Jonathan Guilmette suffered serious falls and decided not to participate in the season finals, so that they were completed with only three relays each.
