Shuichi Murakami

Shūichi “Ponta” Murakami ( Japanese 村上 “ポ ン タ” 秀 一 , Murakami “Ponta” Shūichi , born January 1, 1951 in Nishinomiya , Hyōgo Prefecture ) is a Japanese fusion and jazz musician ( drums ).

Murakami worked in the Japanese jazz scene from the early 1970s; first recordings were made around 1974 in a trio with Akira Ishikawa and Jun Fukamachi ( Soul On ! , Victor); In 1976 he released his debut album Introducing “Ponta” Murakami (Toshiba). In the late 1970s and 80s he also worked with Shuko Mizuno , Martha Miyake , Kazumi Watanabe , Salena Jones , Shigenori Kamiya , Ryuichi Sakamoto , Yasuko Agawa , Tsuyoshi Yamamoto , Yosuke Yamashita , Nancy Wilson ( Keep You Satisfied , Columbia 1985) , Fumio Itabashi , Akira Sakata , Masahiro Sayama , Sadao Watanabe , Makoto Ozone , in the 90s still with Jun Miyake and Yōichi Murata's band Solid Brass .

With his trio Ponta Box with Masahiro Sayama (piano) and Masatoshi Mizuno (bass) Murakami made a guest appearance at the 1995 Montreux Jazz Festival and recorded three albums in the late 90s. In the field of jazz, the discographer Tom Lord lists his participation in 75 recording sessions between 1975 and 2000, most recently with the big band of Tomohito Aoki . He has also worked as a session musician with J-Pop artists.
