Sid Sings is the first solo album by Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious . It was released posthumously on December 15, 1979 via Virgin Records . In the true sense of the word, it was a compilation consisting of various live recordings.

History of origin

Sid Vicious (real name: John Simon Ritchie) died on February 2, 1979 of a heroin overdose. Shortly before his death, he had expressed plans for a solo album, but never got around to putting them into practice. However, a cover version of the Frank Sinatra song My Way was released as a single as early as 1978 . The song comes from the soundtrack to the film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle , which was already finished but not yet released. The Eddie Cochran cover Somethin 'Else was released as the second solo single, also from the soundtrack .

Most of the album comes from an appearance at Max's Kansas City nightclub in New York City . The cast on these evenings was alongside Sid Vicious on vocals Steve Dior (guitar), Arthur Kane (bass) and Jerry Nolan (drums). Born to Lose , a song by Johnny Thunders , was recorded at a Sex Pistols concert in Huddersfield on December 25, 1977 . My Way is a studio version that was recorded in Paris with French musicians. Vicious was poorly textual and used some crude expressions on the recording. The sound material for the album was poorly mixed and is kept in low fidelity . “The Engineer” was therefore responsible for the production. It was John "Boogie" Tiberi.

In addition to nine cover versions, the controversial Sex Pistols song Belsen Was a Gas , which has been difficult to obtain for years, is also on the album. The ironic title, which alluded to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp , is ambiguous: on the one hand, it refers to the Zyklon B gas that is in the gas chambers (although there was none in Bergen-Belsen), and on the other hand, the phrase “be a gas "(" Be great, be fun ") used.

Cover artwork

The artwork showed Sid Vicious in a shirtless white shirt pegged open, a padlock on the collar and a beer in hand. Liner notes and credits were not included. On the label of the UK pressing was a guitar swastika that was removed for the German pressing.

Chart success

Despite the short playing time and the below-average sound quality, the album reached number 30 on the British album charts and stayed in the charts for a total of eight weeks (four of them in the top 40).

Singles

My Way appeared in 1978 as the B-side of the Sex Pistols single No One Is Innocent, starring mail robber Ronald Biggs . The single version differs from the album version in the arrangement of Simon Jeffes , a guitar solo by Steve Jones and a different vocal recording. It was also used on the soundtrack album. The song reached number 7 on the UK charts.

Somethin 'Else was released shortly after Sid Vicious' death as the Sex Pistols single with B-side Friggin 'in the Riggin' and peaked at number three on the UK charts.
