Sidney Wood
Sidney Burr Beardsley Wood (born November 1, 1911 in Black Rock , Connecticut , † January 10, 2009 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American tennis player .
Career
The blond right-hander and nephew of Watson Washburn was 15 years old when he was the youngest player ever to start at Wimbledon and played his first game against René Lacoste . Four years later he won the singles at Wimbledon when he won without a fight against the injured Frank Shields . It should be his only title in a Grand Slam tournament.
In 1935 he reached the final of the US Open , but lost to Wilmer Allison . In 1964 he was accepted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
