Sidney Forrest

Sidney Forrest (born August 21, 1918 in New York City , New York - † August 9, 2013 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American clarinetist and music teacher.

Life

Forrest was a student of various clarinetists with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (including the Russian Simeon Bellison and Alex Williams ) and studied at the University of Miami (BA) and Columbia University (MA), as well as at the Juilliard School of Music . During the Second World War he was principal clarinetist with the United States Marine Band ("The President's Own") for four years .

After the war he became principal clarinetist in the National Symphony Orchestra . He has given concerts at Carnegie Hall , the Library of Congress , the National Gallery of Art, and the Phillips Gallery . Among other things, he played Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto under the direction of the composer. Among his recordings are Paul Hindemith's Sonata and the Grand Duo Concertante by Carl Maria von Weber .

Forrest taught at the Peabody Conservatory for forty years and taught summer classes at Interlochen National Arts Camp in Michigan for forty-five years . He has also taught at American University , George Washington University , Catholic University of America, and Levine School of Music (all in Washington, DC) and was a member of the jury for the National Fulbright Commission , the Buffet North American Competition, and at the Conservatoire du Québec . He gave courses in chamber music at the Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival .

He also worked as editor and arranger and designed a clarinet mouthpiece that is produced by the Leblanc company (now Conn-Selmer, Inc. ).
