from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Bettmann (born June 16, 1869 in Bayreuth , † October 19, 1939 in Zurich ) was a German dermatologist and university professor.

Life

Bettmann was born on June 16, 1869 to Jewish parents in Bayreuth. In 1888 he began studying medicine in Heidelberg , spent the winter semester of 1890/91 in Berlin and then returned to Heidelberg. In 1893 he received his doctorate from the psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin and finally in 1897 his habilitation . From 1894 to 1895 Bettmann was an assistant at the Heidelberg Polyclinic under Oswald Vierordt , then until 1908 as an assistant under Wilhelm Erb (1840–1921) at the Medical University Clinic. From 1899, Erb transferred the care of dermatological and venerological patients to Bettmann. In 1904 he was given a teaching position in this field and from August 15, 1908, he held an extraordinary professorship and the position of director of the Heidelberg Dermatology Clinic. In 1919 he held the Heidelberg chair for skin and venereal diseases. From 1924 to 1925 he was dean of the medical faculty.

In April 1933 a boycott of the private medical practice was called. Bettmann's son Hans-Walter committed suicide on April 1, 1933, after he had been announced that he would be dismissed as a court assessor for “racial” reasons and the call for a boycott and slogans had stood on the door of his parents' house. In October 1934 Siegfried Bettmann felt compelled to apply for his retirement . This was granted in November, but the resolution was later withdrawn and converted into the revocation of teaching permits and retirement on April 1, 1935. Bettmann intended to emigrate to the USA with his wife Rosa (née Friedmann). In March 1939 he left Germany via Switzerland, where he died on October 19, 1939 in Zurich.
