Siegfried Hoyer

Siegfried Hoyer (born June 14, 1928 in Dresden ) is a German historian .

The son of a tool fitter attended the Dresden-Löbtau elementary school from 1934 to 1938. In 1947 he passed the Abitur at the Oberschule Dresden-Plauen. He trained as a librarian from 1947 to 1949 . In 1949 the state examination took place as a qualified librarian. From 1949 to 1950 he was a librarian at the Saxon State Library in Dresden . From 1950 to 1954, Hoyer studied history and Romance studies at the University of Leipzig . Hoyer passed the state examination in history in 1954. In the same year he became a research assistant and lecturer at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and remained so until 1961. With the work The Exodus of German Students from Prague and the Foundation of the University of Leipzig , he received his doctorate in 1960 under Ernst Werner and Ernst Engelberg .

From 1961 to 1968 he was senior assistant at the Institute for German History, Department “From the Beginnings to 1789”. In 1966 , Hoyer completed his habilitation with the work Heresies Between Hus and Luther with Max Steinmetz , Ernst Werner and Gerhard Zschäbitz (1920–1970). Hoyer taught from 1968 to 1977 as a lecturer and from 1977 to 1992 as a full professor of German history from the beginnings to 1789 in Leipzig. From 1992 to 1993 he was Professor of Early Modern History at the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Leipzig. Hoyer retired in 1993.

His main research interests are the German Peasants' War , the Reformation and the history of Leipzig universities and students. Hoyer is a member of the historical commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig . In 1987 Hoyer received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
