Siegfried Rüger (born July 11, 1933 in Leipzig , † September 19, 2007 in Dresden ) was a German engineer and transport scientist . As a professor at the University of Transport in Dresden and the TU Dresden , he influenced the development of local public transport , especially in the GDR, for decades through research projects and specialist books.

Life

Rüger's father had an accident in the mining industry shortly after the war. After finishing school, Rüger first completed a commercial and technical apprenticeship. He then worked for the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, initially as a traffic assistant and technical assistant. In 1955 he became head of the timetable and duty roster office, in 1960 head of the traffic technology group. At the same time he completed a distance learning course at the Dresden University of Transport (HfV) "Friedrich List" in the field of railway operations, which he graduated in 1961 as a graduate engineer. In the same year, Gerhart Potthoff brought him to the Department of Transportation Engineering as a scientific assistant. In 1963 Rüger received his doctorate from Potthoff, followed by his habilitation in 1966 . A year later, Rüger was appointed to the HfV as a university lecturer for industrial engineering in urban transport. From 1974 to 1985 he was head of the Road Transport Technology Science Division. In 1977 he became an associate professor. From October 1990 he was Dean of the Faculty of Transport Engineering and Logistics.

In 1992, parts of the University of Transportation were transferred to the TU Dresden, Rüger actively accompanied the transition as a professor and accordingly from 1994 to 1997 he became dean of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transportation Science, which was taken over from the HfV to the TU . In 2000, Rüger retired and Rainer König became his successor . Rüger remained active until his death in September 2007 through publications and participation in specialist committees such as the Research Association for Roads and Transport or the DVWG . The focus of his scientific work was on issues relating to the operation of local public transport, in particular network design , timetable planning and the creation of duty roster . At the annual meeting of the Association of German Transport Companies , he was awarded the Dr. Friedrich Lehner Medal for outstanding performance in the field of local public transport, and in 1998 the Technical University of Budapest awarded him an honorary doctorate .

Rüger had been married to his wife Erika since 1963 and they have two sons together.
