Origin and variants
The Old Norse form Signý is derived from sig (r) ' Sieg ' and a personal syllable ný (r) , which is common in Old Norse names ( Fafnir , Mjölnir , etc.).
In Scandinavia, various adaptations of the saga of "Hagbard and Signe", which can already be found in Saxo Grammaticus and as a likely medieval Danish folk ballad , are very well known and have contributed to the spread of the name.
