The Roman Catholic Simmel Chapel or Simmel chapel stands at the Simmel in the Bregenzerwälder community Warth in the district of Bregenz in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to St. James and belongs to the Warth parish in the Hinterwald dean's office in the Feldkirch diocese . The chapel is under monument protection ( list entry ). Until it was dissolved as an independent parish, the chapel was once the parish church of Hochkrumbach .

Location description

The church is on Simmel, a hill south of the former salt road on the Hochtannberg Pass .

history

A chapel on the Simmel is mentioned in a document as early as 1550. The church was originally a branch church of the Lech am Arlberg parish , was elevated to a chaplaincy in 1678 and an independent parish church in 1687. The church was rebuilt between 1681 and 1682. The tower was built in 1719 by Gregor Bertold from Dalaas . In 1730 a sacristy was added. The stucco ceiling was created by Johann Walch from Schröcken . The church was consecrated in 1781. The parish has not been occupied since 1856; in 1867 it was incorporated into the Warth parish . The former rectory east of the church was demolished in 1917. On August 3, 2013, the Simmel Chapel was badly damaged by lightning. As a result, large parts of the tower and the cross had to be renewed and the tower ball renovated. After this work was completed, the chapel was reopened to the public on September 28, 2014 by the Diocesan Bishop of Feldkirch, Benno Elbs, as part of a “Peace Mass on Simmel”, which was preceded by a star pilgrimage . At the same time a new high altar was inaugurated.
