Simon Baier

Simon Baier (* 1979 in Bamberg ) is a German art historian , art critic and professor at the University of Basel .

Life

Simon Baier studied art history and philosophy in Heidelberg , Karlsruhe and New York City between 2000 and 2005 . He then worked as a Fellow for Critical Studies at the Whitney Museum of American Art . Baier was employed at the University of Basel from 2008 to 2013, then moved to the University of Zurich , where he became a research assistant for Sebastian Egenhofer . At the same time, Baier completed his dissertation on the artists El Lissitzky and Kasimir Malewitsch . He then moved to the University of Vienna , where he gave courses on Conceptual Art and the work of Edouard Manet until 2017 . Baier has held the Laurenz Assistant Professorship for Contemporary Art since September 2017 .

His research focuses on the areas of avant-garde movements in Russia and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s , the use of media in art, as well as art criticism, philosophical aesthetics and art theory in modern times.

Baier, who is a member of the Theory of Sculpture Research Network at the Berlin University of the Arts , has also published essays on the works of the artists Ei Arakawa , Piet Mondrian , Barnett Newman and Wladimir Evgrafowitsch Tatlin .
